Following the Calendar is a way to honor the Loas and Spirits in Vodou. The upcoming Fete Ghede (or Fet Gede) is celebrated in Haiti and also in New Orleans.....here are some interesting facts about Papa Ghede and his special time of the year---

Karen McCarthy Brown describes the dynamic deity Gede in her book, __Mama Lola__:

"Papa Gede, as Alourdes [Mama Lola] calls him, is a trickster spirit. Through his randy, playful, childish, and childlike personality Gede raises life energy and redefines the most painful situation — even death itself — as one worth a good laugh. Gede is a transformation artist, and this is the reason he is also the principal healer among the Vodou lwa.

Gede is the Vodou spirit who presides over the realms of sex, death, and humor. His possession-performances vary along a spectrum that tracks the path of a human life. He eats with his hands and sometimes throws his food like an infant. Like a two-year-old, he delights in saying naughty words. He is horny and predatory with women, like a young man with raging hormones. Like a favorite uncle, he hunkers down with the faithful and listens with genuine care to the most homely of their complains…

Gede has license to break all the social rules. … Haitians are, in general, a discreet and proper people. Lacking physical privacy, they strongly emphasize good manners. It is, for example, highly insulting to call a person malelve (badly reared); were Gede not a spirit, he would be a prime candidate for this insult. He can say all the things that are forbidden in polite company, act out the impulses others must suppress. … He alone can satirize the powerful and the privileged; only Gede could get away with making fun of Catholic priests. …

Gede takes people on a journey through their most out-of-control selves and, in so doing, prepares them to move back into the ordinary world where reserve and control must reign. Yet Gede's possession-performances should not be mistaken for mere entertainment.

Gede brings to the surface a connection between sexuality and life energy pervasive in Vodou spirituality. All Vodou rituals aim to echofe (heat things up). To raise heat, to raise luck, to raise life energy, to intensify sexuality in the broadest sense — these are all more or less the same process. The arrival of Gede at the end of a Vodou ceremony provides an extra, intense dose of the power needed to conquer life, to use it and enjoy it, rather than be conquered by it."

Fet Gede - the Vodou Festival of the Ancestors
by Ross Heaven

We carry the past around with us. It is in our memories, in the "ether" that surrounds us, in our family history - and, perhaps, in our cellular memory. Recent studies have shown that transplant patients inherit more than just organs when they take on the cells of some other person; they also take on the memories associated with the donor1. And yet, how often we deny the past and pretend we are mavericks, pioneers of the future. That is, until the past catches up with us and we must come face to face with the personal history we have denied ourselves.

It can be a shocking and sometimes painful experience to learn that you are not as free as you thought you were- that you are carrying around echoes of the past in your soul, even though your thoughts and intentions are pointed at the future. In one of the exercises I teach on my workshops, participants take a journey into their own ancestral history to meet with their forebears to understand the gifts and the burdens that these ancestors have passed down to them. In addition to discovering their talents and skills - and, sometimes, opportunities in life that these distant relatives have given them - it is not unusual to discover that current illnesses and life problems also have roots in the past. The shame of a long-past event can get lodged somehow in the cells of the body at the place corresponding to an earlier historical abuse. One woman discovered, for example, that her current problem of stress-related self-harming (to her stomach area, across the womb) had its cause in the rape of one of her ancestors four centuries before. In such ways, the past catches up with us. Only by confronting it can we become free to move into a healthier, more powerful, future.

Modern science and psychiatry is, at best, ambivalent (and, often, dismissive) of such historical connections. But traditional societies - which are more inclined to honour and understand the contribution our ancestors continue to make to our world - see clearly the therapeutic value of dealing with past issues through an ongoing relationship with those who have gone before us.

Fet Gede in Haiti is just such a past-honouring event. Known as the Festival of the Ancestors, Fet Gede (Fet = Festival, Gede = The Sacred Dead) is the Vodou equivalent of Mardi Gras, the Mexican Day of the Dead, and Halloween, all in one. People dress up, take to the streets, dance their communion with the ancestors, and walk in processions to the graveyards where they feed their ancestral dead with the gifts of their own table. In this way, spirits are honoured and their protection is gained for the coming year.

In peristyles (churches) up and down the country, there is music, dancing and feasting. The priests and the people come together, and there is enough drumming, singing, and laughter to – literally! – raise the dead. It is a time for celebration, for reconnecting with the past, and preparing for the future, with music, processions, sacred rituals and spiritual observances taking place throughout.

Connecting with the ancestors in this way opens new doors to understanding not only the past influences that have played their part in shaping our lives, but, often, the current issues we are facing. By reconnecting with our past, these issues are resolved through new insights into our lives. Our pathways into the future also become clearer. It is heartening to know that our ancestors are not lost to us, but continue to play a part in our lives by offering us their love and care from the world of the spirit.

During the ceremonies of Fet Gede, there is always a spiritual procession to the cemetery, with ancestral services at the Cross of Baron, the lwa who is guardian of the cemetery, the crossroads, the bridge between life and death, and head of the family of Gedes (the ancestors). With riotous good humour, Baron is a gentle protector of his people and of children. There is a story in Haiti of a mass manifestation of 30 Barons who marched fearlessly on the Presidential Palace to demand justice for the people during the turbulent days of the now long-gone Duvalier regime. Even the dictator Duvalier had to listen to the will of Baron, and the policy which offended the lwa was duly changed!

One of the most moving ceremonies of this week is an ancestral service at kay mo (House of the Ancestors) that each Houngan has as part of his peristyle. People often bring with them photographs or other images of ancestors they wish to honour, and any special offerings of food or drink enjoyed by those ancestors during their lives. They then make a personal service of reverence for their loved ones, which enables them to let go of unhelpful influences from the past as well as thanking the ancestors and accepting their helpful gifts for the future.

In order to be all that we can be in our lives, we must know where we have come from and what influences have shaped us and continue to play a part in our present. Only by truly knowing ourselves can we hope to be free.

The Western world has largely abandoned the past and become future-orientated and fixated on achievement. Very rarely do we look – and learn – from the past and where we have come from. Perhaps if we did, we could avoid some of the personal and global problems we experience in the world today. If we embraced an understanding of the true impact of the last war, for example, perhaps we would be less inclined to run headlong into the next one.

Paradoxically, we call ourselves "developed" and "civilized" in the Western world. But it is traditional societies – those which are "undeveloped" and "uncivilised" – which often hold the key to a real understanding of the world.

By offering insight into the past, Fet Gede frees people from the patterns and habits they can so easily and thoughtlessly repeat, and prepares them for a better future where they can achieve happiness and greater richness in their lives.

When I first started my novel (about Pirates and Vodou in 1713), I based my first scribblings on past life memories. In one of these memories, I was in St. Domingue (old European name for Haiti), I was told about Oshun, and led to a fresh water source.....

Later, as I studied Vodou writings, it was said that Oshun was not a Vodou spirit.

NOW....just this year....I am finding references to Oshun CONNECTED with Haitian Vodou!

Here is one:

"Oshun in Vodou is known as Manbo Oshoun, not in every hounfor, but some still know!"
http://soupwen.com/#/orisha/4534661951

The whole article referenced above is about the existence of Orishas along with Loas in SOME Haitian practices.

Here's another:

"From Shamanic Roots, we find an early form of Vodou, known as Oshun, which eventually spread to West Africa prior to European slavery."
http://www.helium.com/items/582538-origins-of-voodoo

So, I am asking, does anyone know if there are connections with Oshun that might have been in play in 1713 Haiti?

BTW, here's a lovely description of an Altar for Oshun:

__Mark of Voodoo: Awakening to My African Spiritual Heritage__ by Sharon Caulder

Here is a review:

Synopsis

The True Account of One Woman's Odyssey into Voodoo

In midlife, native New Yorker Sharon Caulder left her successful physical therapy practice to find her soul among the Voodoo people in Benin Republic, West Africa. Mark of Voodoo is the story of her amazing experiences with sub-Saharan African Voodoo-the root of all Voodoo-including her initiation into the spiritual hierarchy as a full-fledged chief, and her romance with the Supreme Chief.

Dr. Caulder speaks candidly about karma, evolution, tantric sexual systems, sacrifice, and spirit possessions. Hers is the first book to explain what happens during Voodoo rituals from both the visible and invisible perspectives.

This revealing account contains graphic anthropological details of rituals and sacrifices, and includes 16 pages of color photos of the people in the book, their rituals, and practices. Filled with adventure and romance, this is a story that will speak to your psyche and your heart.

Publishers Weekly

This book documents Caulder's pilgrimage to uncover Vodou's roots in the West African coastal areas of the Republic of Benin, and there to clarify her role as a Vodou (which she calls "Voodoo") leader. Raised in Brooklyn, until the age of 13 Caulder was a participant in Voodoo rituals conducted by her great-aunt. The book opens with an explicit, vivid and, for some, horrifying scene of Caulder as a five-year-old subjected to ritual abuse, climaxing with the torture and sacrifice of a cat. Until her early 40s, Caulder was repulsed by such powerful experiences, but when her memories returned as flashbacks, she left her family and her physical therapy practice, abruptly setting off for Benin. Within one day of her arrival, Caulder's "inner guide" provided her with the location, the identity and an introduction to the Benin "pope" of Voodoo, Supreme Chief Daagbo Hounon Houna. Over time, Caulder was initiated into Voodoo's spiritual hierarchy and came to appreciate that the "basic structure of Voodoo is a fine one," although she became increasingly troubled by animal sacrifice and spirit possession, illustrated in some of the 16 pages of color photos. To the extent that objectivity can be applied to spiritual pursuits, Caulder's seems strained by the fact that she fell in love with Daagbo, and by such offhand revelations as "I most often used my clairvoyant abilities" for translation during conversations and rituals. For those who can discern legitimacy and have a strong stomach for animal slaughter, Caulder's account is not without merit. (Jan.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Biography

Born and raised in the United States, Sharon Caulder is an African Voodoo chief and holds a Ph.D. in Mythology and Depth Psychology. She has also earned professional credentials in physical therapy, psychology, and neuroscience. Currently she maintains a spiritual healing practice in Oakland, California, where she receives clients from throughout the U.S. and the world. She works with people with conditions that range from the physical (such as cancer) to the psychological (such as schizophrenia), including eating disorders, addictions, and spiritual crises.
-------------------------------------------------------
Maggie's note: I read this book a few years ago and it was eye opening for me. Hearing Wedosi speak a little about the Vodou practices and people of Western Africa has sent me back to the book with a "new eye." I am understanding a bit more of what I read before! There is still much that puzzles me...........but I guess that is natural! Anyway, for anyone interested in Vodou in Africa, this is a very interesting read.

It is interesting that Sharon Caulder is now the Director and Curator of Chez Vodun African Voodoo Museum and Temple where she maintains a spiritual healing practice conducting weekly Voodoo rituals and continuing her work in teaching people “to be at one with their own spirits and to work to enhance and to increase their own potential so that they may continue to grow.”

http://www.hauntedamericatours.com/voodoo/chezvodun/

From the book:

“Voodoo offers a religious doctrine for people to live by. The doctrine helps people to live honorably. Voodoo is particularly instrumental in helping people cope with the difficulties and sorrows of daily living by providing a pantheon of deities – spirits who move freely between the realms – to assist them when they are in need.”

Attempting to come to terms with a childhood permeated by voodoo rituals, and prompted by intuition, Sharon Caulder, a practicing physical therapist with a doctorate in mythology, undertakes a life-changing journey to Benin, formerly Dahomey, West Africa, in search of her spiritual roots. In this fascinating book, Caulder recounts her immersion in the heritage of her African Motherland and her initiation into traditional Voodoo, culminating in her creation as an African Voodoo Chief. Caulder describes her challenges as she adjusts to the culture and pace of a small Benin village and relates with unabashed honesty details of her growing romance with the man known as the Supreme Chief of All Voodoos, the imposing Daagbo Hounon Houna. Caulder describes in vivid detail the rites and rituals associated with this ancient faith, a tradition that has been maligned and misunderstood wherever it has appeared in the world.

Caulder’s factual and colorful account of true-life experiences among present day practitioners of Voodoo is a valuable anthropological tool for those interested in understanding the role of Voodoo in the development of the African peoples; it is also a rare, detailed account of one woman’s discovery of her vast spiritual potential and worth.
From the web site:

Ronald W. Lewis is the founder, curator and director of the House of Dance and Feathers. After many years of working on the city’s streetcar track as a worker and union rep, he has devoted himself to cultural activism and education. After the flood, Ronald partnered with the Tulane City Center and Project Locus to plan the rebuilding of the backyard museum. In a wide-reaching collaboration, that pulled in architects, students and volunteers from all over the United States, the new museum was designed and built in the Summer of 2006. The participants labored in the long Louisiana summer, and the physical signs of construction in progress on Tupelo Street attracted the attention of out of town visitors, as well as displaced New Orleanians returning to tour their own home town. As was Ronald Lewis’ intention, the rebuilding of the museum on Tupelo Street contributed to the voices calling for neighbors to come home.

Since 2006, the museum has become an important gathering place for scholars, activists, students, neighbors, and volunteers to talk about the history and culture of the Lower Nine, and to discuss the rebuilding of New Orleans. The museum has also hosted numerous meetings, workshops, and gatherings for people who are working to make things happen in New Orleans. Visitors to the House of Dance and Feathers experience the power of self-representation and the value of cultural exchange. Mr. Lewis is currently working with Rachel Breunlin and the Neighborhood Story Project to produce a museum catalogue. In his museum tours and public talks, Mr. Lewis speaks eloquently about the social significance of place, family, and cultural traditions in community-building, and he has been an outspoken advocate for a resident-led rebuilding of the Lower Ninth Ward.
I'm new to Tribe and was excited to see a Vodou section. I've been researching Vodou lately and have grown rather fascinated by it. I've been a Wiccan since I was 12 (Scott Cunningham got me started). Lately, Wicca seems stale to me and I've been wanting more of a passionate spirituality. That is when Vodou seemed to pop out of nowhere.

I was wondering how common is it for someone to be solitary and practice it? I live in the middle of rural Michigan of all places. I feel like I could blend it with Witchcraft easily.

Right, right, down to business :].

I've read several books about Vodou, most of which center around Haitian Vodou and outline the impact of the Duvalier duo, and the slave revolts. However, one book I read was a personal account of the author's experience with Vodou as he explored it within the U.S.. The book was "American Voudou: Journey Into a Hidden World," ( url: http://www.amazon.com/American-Voudou-Journey-Hidden-World/dp/1574410814 -- the version I received was a hardback, with a red cover, and not much else. A bit peculiar, as it was worn and extremely vague .-. ). In any case, I was simply wondering what you, the Tribe, thought of this book, or if anyone else had read it. Thank you very much in advance.

( And now I wait for Nechesh to suggest "The Four Horsemen" :) ).

When I was little, I had a plaster "altar" I liked to play with. It was a very beautiful altar, very "Catholic," with several tiers. It was about a foot and a half long, a foot tall, and about 8 inches "thick". Decorated with white plaster "cloths" and "crosses" and such. The "candles" were long with glass tips that shone when you put a light bulb inside the hollow altar and plugged it in! (I was the only child I knew who had a toy altar....LOL!!!)

(BTW, when I was little, I also accompanied my Aunt....who was a nun...to the "real" Church and helped her clean and refresh the BIG Altar at the Church of the Sacred Heart.)

I would sometimes pretend I was a priest when I played with my "little" altar.

Anyway, in my dream, this altar had grown to be "lifesize". Before seeing the altar I was interacting with 2 African/American gentlemen. They were both (in the dream) "rappers." I didn't recognize them, but felt comfortable with one of the them. I was a little more wary of the other one, who seemed to be a "trickster" type. That one wore a black hat.

When I looked at the altar, it was decorated with all kinds of things...flowers, pictures of saints, statues, etc. I also saw pictures of each of the 2 African American gentlemen on the altar! I felt very warm and respectful toward the altar. I was walking around it, ringing a bell. I felt like I was consecrating it or starting a ceremony with it.

Then I woke up!

What do you think of this? I would love to get to know the 2 Loas (if that is what they were....) better. Any ideas on how to do this???

"The best cleansing bath is one taken in a body of natural water....Sit on the shore for a while and talk to the Mother about your problems....as you walk into the water, chant, 'I thank you, Most Holy Mother, for taking my concerns and washing them away.' Walk into the water...when you come ashore, dress yourself in fine new clothes. Conclude by leaving an offering such as silver coins, food, or the promise of a good deed. As you leave the area, don't look back." --Teish, __Jambalaya__

Libations are poured for the Ancestors (water, juices or alcohol can be used). There are also washes for the household, especially for the floors and the steps of a house.

What I am wondering is.....is the Vodou "cleansing" ritual the forerunner of the Christian practice of Baptism?

Will you share your knowledge of working with the "flowing" aspects of Vodou for cleansing or healing purposes?

The Gospel of Truth from His Own Being (Modern Gnostic Gospel)
"This is the Gospel of Truth which the Father brought forth from His Own Being. This is the Book of Salvation containing in itself the fullness of all that there is. This is the Word of AIWAZ-Zothyrius, son of the aeon and sun of the daemon. Now because all things come forth from the Meon, there was a deeply held darkness covering over the face of the fullness, for the fullness of the Father was only known in the darkness and not in the light.
Now light is eternal and is the very life of the Father, and yet the Father did not reveal the fullness of His Light, but only that fullness which is in darkness. Hence that which was revealed was not the fullness of the Father but only an image of the fullness.
Therefore, the Father spoke to the Savior and to Depth and told them of their incompleteness before the Father, for they dwelt in darkness and lacked the fullness of wisdom and light.
Then the Father spoke to Knowledge and to the Church and told them of their incompletness before the Father, for they too, like the pair from which they were generated dwelt in darkness and lacked the fullness of wisdom and light.
The Father spoke as such saying that there are two wisdoms and there are two lights, one which is the widom of Depth, which is incomplete, but the other which is complete is Divine Wisdom (Theou Sophia), which alone the Father may give, for the Meon is Nothingness and no longer can be said to be, and one which is the shadowy light of the Savior, which is incomplete, but the other which is complete is the Light of Christ (Phos Christou), which alone the Father may give, for the Meon is nothingness and does not exist.
So the Savior was chosen by Wisdom and by Knowledge and by the Church to speak to the Father and the Savior sought to enter into the mystery whereby the fullness of the Light of the Father would be known. But the Father spoke saying that the Divine Pairs must realize their incompleteness and lack of perfection before this first mystery would be reavealed, before the Father would show it forth. Now the Savior humbled himself before the Father in the name of the Divine Pairs and said that the Divine Pairs were incomplete and this he said in their name, for he acted as the cheif henad of all the Divine Syzygies and he acknowledged the incompleteness of the pairs and so he sought to know and to see the First Mystery, which does not come forth from the Father but which is within the Father and which is the Father at all times. And to this the three other members of the Divine Pairs had agreed with certainty.
Therefore, the Father bid the Divine Pairs, through the Savior, to come before Him in the timelessness of His Being. Now the Father spoke to the Divine Pairs and as he spoke He revealed the First Mystery. The First Veil of the Mystery He removed, which is Purity, and the Divine Pairs saw Divine Wisdom. And Divine Wisdom (Theou Sophia) is not a henad of a pair, but is the Hidden Arche of Depth of Knowledge. And Theou Sophia is the substance of the First Mystery.
And the Father continued to speak to the pairs and as He spoke He revealed more of the light of the First Mystery for He removed before their heavenly eyes the Second Veil of the First Mystery, which is the Christos, which is the essence of the First Mystery of the Fullness of The Father and The Christos is the Arche of The Savior and the Church, for He is the completeness of the Light of the First Mystery of Salvation and the Church is His Body (Soma).
Now as the Divine Pairs realized their participation in the First Mystery of the Father, and thus they are complete in the Father when they participate in this the First Mystery, The Christos spoke to them from the Light fo the First Mystery and He Who is the Light of the Eternal revealed to them who were formerly in darkness that He was the Reason (Logos) of the Father, whereby all things are as they are and must be for they cannot be otherwise, and so because they were complete in the Father, the Father of Lights and All the Henads united them each as individuals with the substance of the First Mystery, wifh is Theosophy and them with the essence of the First Mystery, which is The Christ. And because they knew the Light they as Divine Pairs also know the Reason and in this unity of the First Mystery They became the Second Mystery which is the Spirit (Pneuma) because they participate in the First Mystery.
Now the Fullness of the Father is participated in by the Divine Pairs, for they have entered into the First Mystery and have become one with the Light which is the Second Mystery. Therefore They have received the Light of the Christ and all the aeons and all the daemons and all of the other Ideal Pairs (Syzygies) saw the Light reflected in and from the Divine Pairs in the Fullness and they knew that the Darkness had been banished to the lesser and lower nothingness. And so the Syzygiues were filled with the Holy spirit of Light, which is the Second
Mystery and which fills all of the Fullness of the Father.
This is the Zothyrian Christogony. This is the Book of Salvation. This is the Gospel of Truth"

Two well known and respected santeros/paleros in the community have been charged with child endangerment. Nosy neighbors called the police on them, and the prosecutor from Paterson, NJ is now charging them. They say that the child was cut with a razor blade, had her clothes torn off and was "forced to witness an animal sacrifice"....sounds like a rompimiento to me. Please help this couple by writing, calling or emailing the prosecutors office and defending our right to religious freedom. This is very serious-it seems that they are attempting to remove the children from the couple.

You can all check out the article here:

http://www.myfoxny. com/dpp/news/ new_jersey/ 090708_Girl_ Hurt_Animal_ Sacrifice_ Paterson

When you write, be sure to include these points:

* If jews are allowed to circumcise their children by a rabbi with no medical attention, how is that different then any scarification involved in a religious ritual at least as old, if not older? AND, every parent who pierces their child's ears should also be prosecuted.

*Animal sacrifice is protected under the freedom of religion, and the supreme court case .
S. Supreme Court
CHURCH OF LUKUMI BABALU AYE v. CITY OF HIALEAH, 508 U.S. 520 (1993)
508 U.S. 520 CHURCH OF LUKUMI BABALU AYE, INC. v. CITY OF HIALEAH
No. 91-948
http://userwww. sfsu.edu/ ~biella/santeria /dec1.html

**If children are not allowed to see animal sacrifice (which is often cleaned and consumed afterwards) then every farmed with a child, or chef who has slaughtered and animal for food should be thrown in jail. In addition, the islamic practice of slaughtering a lamb for Eid el-Kebir is also unlawful.

*** This is about religious freedom, NOT child endangerment. No child was in danger, this is about RELIGIOUS IGNORANCE AND INTOLERANCE.

Hi All,

Firstly, I would like to say a big hello to all. I am not much of a poster as I am new in this in a way. The reason being what has been passed down from my Grandaunt to me mainly involved rootwork, herbs, catholic saints, rituals, etc. I don't know what we are called as when I asked my Grandaunt, she just said things which are being passed down by the women of the family which helps us by and by. So, to learn more and gain more knowledge and insight, I decided to join groups which I can learn and share with.

I have never worked with San Simon before but I seems to be drawn to him. San Simon is also identified with Saint Simon Peter in Santeria and Voodoo practices. From what I found out, he is quite an easy Saint to work with. his offerings ranges from Cigarettes, Liquor, Money, Tamales, Fruits, etc.

Can I hear from all who had/have worked with him and your experiences?

Thanks so much!

I am not an initiated member of Vodou, but I will be someday. For now I am content with honoring my Ancestors, the Lwa and of course God. I am reading everything I can get my hands on - but I prefer Haitian Vodou over New Orleans Vodou, personally. I hope to make many, many friends in the religion of Vodou here. ( =

As hurricane season begins, so too do solicitations from con artists seeking to profit from Haitian misery. You sincerely want to do the right thing -- but how do you know that your contribution won't end up lining a scammer's pockets instead of helping hungry Haitians? How do you make sure that your donation dollar isn't used to fund someone else's religious or political agenda? And how can you make sure that your donations do the most good?

Here are a few organizations which have an excellent track record and which are lauded for their transparency and accountability: if you give your money here, you can rest assured that a sizeable percentage will go to those in need.

****

HANDS TOGETHER
http://www.handstogether.org/

A Springfield, Massachusetts nonprofit organization aimed at helping the poorest of Haiti's poor, Hands Together receives four stars from Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org).

KIVA
http://www.kiva.org

Kiva is one of the leading microloan organizations. Instead of handouts, they offer small business loans to families and individual entrepreneurs. In time, one $25 donation could be used to fund a dozen different projects and help that many families out of poverty. Kiva works in many countries, including Haiti: I support them and would recommend them to others without hesitation.

LAMBI FUND
http://www.lambifund.org/

A developmental organization run by Haitians for Haitians; also highly rated by Charity Navigator.

MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES/DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS
http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org

Winners of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, the French organization provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. MSF doctors go to places where angels fear to tread, bringing medical care without regard for race, creed, color or political affiliation.

*****
`
As for solicitations from other charities, here are a few guidelines.

* Ask them if they are a 501(c)(3) corporation. If they aren't, ask them why not. If they can't give you a good answer, or start getting defensive or hostile when you bring up the question, send your money elsewhere.

* Check their rating on Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org). If they are not listed there, ask them why not. If they can't give you a good answer, or start getting defensive/hostile when you bring up the question, send your money elsewhere. (My wife also recommends networkforgood.org -- you can search charities by keyword if you're looking for ethical, vetted charities working in Haiti or other regions).

* Call their local police department. Ask them if this charity is registered in their jurisdiction: inform them of the solicitation you received and any other solicitations which were distributed. Be prepared to send copies of this solicitation and to answer further questions should an investigation commence. Your single report may not be enough to send the scammer to prison -- but if a pattern of phony solicitation and begging is established, police may very well take an interest in prosecution. (You may also want to contact your state attorney general: they may be interested to know that an unregistered nonprofit organization is soliciting donations in their state).

* Above all else, use common sense. Stories about starving Haitian children may be true but they aren't an acceptable answer to "so what percentage of money collected goes to feed Haitians?" Pictures of ragged urchins playing in ditches are not proof that your contribution will improve their lot. Fundraisers tend to focus on emotional hot topics, but if they can't provide some solid facts, plans and forecasts to go along with their threnody of woe, chances are good that they're conning you.

Meanwhile those who are very knowledgeable in Palo with only once nation of Kongo want to take their time in training their house members and being selfish in other ways. Palo could be practiced like Vodou but we all know why it's not but in my eyes that is no excuse why a lot of paleros and paleras should be " poowerless " without a ganga. This is the said reason why people treat Palo like it's some type of stepping stone just to make Ocha which is seriously ridicules and then people got the nerve to argue for years about Palo and Santo not being the same which is true. Meanwhile Vodou Kanzo candidates are literately walking thru FIRE learning, sacrificing goats, bulls, pigs, and basically working some strong Lwas, while paleros are giving their Nkisis a chicken or two and calling it a day. FUCK THAT. It's a wonder why us Blacks are the sole rulers of this universe while other nationalities imitate and wish to be as "aggressive" as a Black King or Queen. AS YOU CAN SEE I AM TIRED OF YOU " CERTAIN WEAK SPANISH ELDERS " who think shit is a game and bullshit around, Time waits for nobody and patience is not relevant in this case. You got to be warriors if your going to practice an Afrikan Traditional Religion which is a WARRIOR way of life!!! A lot of these "CERTAIN" spanish paleros front like they got all the secrets with a nganga and can't be touched. DON'T BE FOOLED, A VODOU BOKOR WILL ALWAYS HAVE YOUR FIRST CLASS TICKET INTO GRAVEYARD IF YOU EVER COME OUT YOUR FACE WRONG. I'm not speaking to anybody in particular but only a select few all around the world. Excuse my bad language but the shit has got me real heated and got me ready to start targeting these " powerful paleros " who think they the shit that be disrespecting Black people in their own little selfish way and non of you would want that, I sware to you.

Ok, while reading the other post that began with a simple question on how to contruct an altar to honor the God, the Lwa, and the Ancestors, it became clear that somewhere we had taken a very, very wrong turn indeed. Now since this is the Vodou tribe, please only post about the design and construction of Hatian Vodou altars and shrines. I understand that alot of us are also iivolved in Orisha traditions and Palo, as am I, but they have their own tribes. The reason I want to revisit the topic i beacuse I love to build altars and shrine, and my house might as well be a temple, so I would love to hear what others have to add about how to design, furnish, construct, and keep-up with an altar or shrine.

I personally love working with Catholic images, as I am catholic myself, but some are not confortable with this type of imagery, so while Catholic saints are all over my altars, they may not have a place on others. When ever I first get the idea to make an altar or shrine one of the first thing I do is to find out which saints fit that Lwa, and which ones have traditionally been used as their symbol, then track down a statue of that saint ( sometimes this is easier said than done, like when I spent weeks looking for a St. Ulrich statue for my Met Agwe altar.) Some other items are fans in the colors of the Lwa, and of course lots of white and appropriately colored candles. Also, items taken from nature, or a place that is symbolic of the Lwa are great, (feathers for Erzulie-Freda, leave garlands for Gran Bwa, shells for LaSarine and LaBaline, etc)

And while having an elder or mambo is very good for building orthodox altars, it is my no means imperative to the process, especially for a beginner.

much love

This started as a response to a thread in another tribe, but it's a recurring question that is sometimes controversial, although it should not be. The Babalawo and Olorisa are complementary attributes of divine order. They are obliged to work together.

Traditionally, wherever Ifa worship exists, the Babalawo is consulted at LEAST before any important ritual is performed. When the head of any orisa temple is preparing to celebrate his or her annual festival (ocha birthday), Ifa is consulted. When the King is preparing to celebrate the annual festival of the kingdom, he consults Ifa first. When someone wants to know which orisa dwells within him or her, that person cosults Ifa FIRST. This is because Ifa is the spokesman of Olodumare (God Almighty).

Each orisa has his or her dominion: some are masters of the river spirits, others are masters of fire spirits. Ifa is THE medium of communication between Olodumare and the orisa, between the orisa and humanity and between the orisa themselves. ALL forms of Yoruba divination are derivatives of Ifa. No exceptions. So, the Babalawo is the closest to the spirit of divination, the word of Olodumare.

Think of it in terms of any profession. Anyone can fix their own plumbing. anyone can represent himself in a court of law. Anyone can perform medical procedures on himself. But if you want the best practices in any discipline, you go to the professional who is dedicated to that discipline. You want the professional who has the highest authorization, the most complete resources and the best connections to allow him to make DEFINITIVE descisions on the issue at hand. Ifa is the definitive system of Yoruba divination.

Once Ifa has spoken, he will relate the needs and requisites of the various orisa. The orisa speak through Ifa. Ifa is the head. Orisa is the body. Ifa decides. Orisa acts.

Hope this helps,
The Guede always seem a little like Babaluaye to me with their relationship to death, the anscestors, sexuality and healing which are very Babaluaye fields. Unlike "Rhythms of Rapture" and "Angels in the Mirror" (both of which I also really like), the style is more uniform rather than diverse. I suppose it may also be more traditional as the other two include lots of experimentation with modern music, because "Spirits of Life" reminds me more of Cuban Santeria style drumming and singing. Well, all I really have to go off of is Lydia Cabrera's recordings...
I would always read the opening chant of "Papa Legba, ouvri baye; Atibon Legba ouvri baye pou moin" etc. in books but never really knew how the vocal chorus went. They sing it on this CD and it sounds really pretty. Helps me realize the limits of my imagination!
However, the list of songs are mismatched- terribly. I mean, it is written that this somgs if for Agoue Damballah or Erzulie Ti Jean and when you listen it will be singing the name of a totally different lwa!
Still, I really like it and recommend it.
I noticed that Matisou Legba was in Boukan Ginen (I also read that he was in Boukman Eksperyans as well)- he was one of the drummers/spokesmen that came to KU when I lived in Lawrence, Kansas. He was part of a 2 day presentation to talk about the history and current political situation of Haiti, and the second day was devoted to lectures on Vodou. There was a short class on drumming and dancing for the Lwa although there were no real ceremonies and therefore no possessions occured.
It was rumored that they were attempting to move to Lawrence and start up a new rock band called Azaka, but that didn't happen while I was still living there (2001-2004). The name would have been very fitting as the Kansas prairie was like one great big desert of wheat.

Then supplementing my contact with some pendulum consultations with loa to find out what sacrifices or rites that I could perform to bring about a closer relationship. This technique was used by a friend of mine for quite sometime and I feel that some of you could shed more light on it for me or warn me of potential pitfalls.

Another question I have... is there a good resource for drum patterns for specific loa? outside of going to a rite? I create electronic music (Industrial and noise) and I think I may try experimenting with the "possesion of the hands" concept to create electronic rhythms to accompany my later rituals. Are there specific loa that teach rhythms? Any advice is welcome.

Sorry if my lines of questioning are offensive to traditions or otherwise insulting. I am just very interested in a tradition that seems so Alive and that's what has sparked my interest in voudoun.

1. How does a Mambo and Houngan determine who the Met Tet of the individual is?

During initiation they watch all kinds of signs and eventually the spirit may actually even show up and claim the person. Or spirits like Ogou Feray or Gede who interact more with people will come and tell them while monte chwal.

2. For what circumstances does a Mambo and Houngan do a reading,

I assume here you mean a general reading for work? Basically they will do a reading for any clients who come to ask for their help.

3. and why do they usually use a pack of playing cards instead of cowrie shells?

There is a legend about this, it comes down to the lwa gave the houngan and manbo the gift of "eyes" so they can see without the shells.

3. What exactly is the difference between Orisha and Lwa?

Different tribes, different cultures, different histories. You might ask what is the difference between the lwa and the daimonae of the Greeks for that matter.. Haitian priests seem to have interesting things to say.

4. How were the Dahomeans influenced by the Yoruba,

They were two cultures in proximity to one another in West Africa, and loaned words etc back and forth.. there are a ton of books in a good academic library on West Africa and the history.

5. and why did the Haitians prefer to let their New World traditions evolve from the former

In the areas around Port Au Prince, the root houses were based on Dahomean enclaves, and the asson tradition specifically comes out of that root.. in other parts of Haiti other nations predominate, like the Ibo-Kongo in the north, and there is a root house, I forget which one (Souvenans? pulling that out of my crack pretty much.. so it's probably wrong) that is almost entirely Nago.

6. while the Cubans prefered the latter?

Cuba had a higher proportion of Yoruba than anyone else. But like in Haiti it depends on what part of the island you are on. Havana is more priveleged and traditions around there gained prominence, other parts of Cuba I'm told are more Kongo or more Dahomean depending on what groups collected in what areas.

7. As more Cubans and Haitians relocate to the United States, and as more Americans take interest in both, these are questions that will be of great interest and importance.

I'm not sure these are so important, they are pretty basic to me but then I had the benefit of hanging out with an houngan nearly every day or several times a week to hang out for a number of years running, plus the benefit of talking to Shloma a lot about Ocha.

There's a larger problem here though.

For some reason, it really is remarkably difficult to get a discussion going on this forum--much more so than other ATR forums on tribe, where I've seen very lively and cordial exchanges.

Part of it is an experience gap--it is next to impossible for a non initiate to get good information about vodou. Books won't take you very far at all, as Damien has discovered. Most of vodou simply isn't _in_ books. You have to be there. So people ask, and this is one place to ask.

Generally, it's hard to get answers. Other people who have read other books might respond as best they can--but there's the same literary echo chamber problem. Mike almost invariably responds, but his tone can be pretty off-putting.

I think you're being a bit hard on Travis, Kathy. Historically, he's been one of the few people here willing, able, and available to give good and complex information in a pleasant and informative tone. Admittedly, he's sounded pretty terse in his last couple of posts, but that's uncharacteristic.

I respond because I like talking to people about these things and have a good intuitive sense, but I'm not a vodou initiate. I'm not even an ATR initiate.

Kathy, in your last couple of posts you re-emphasize that the purpose of this list is to discuss vodou (and not other traditions). You also point out that you and Mike are vodou initiates (and Travis is not). In context, this implies that your words and Mike's carry more authority on this list than the words of others. I'm not sure if you meant to imply that or not, but that is one possible inference to draw.

Although I do my best to be mannerly and contribute positively, and I know that you and I are on good terms, this makes me--non vodou and non-ATR practitioner, feel a bit marginalized, and less inclined to speak. I'm pretty sure that that wasn't your intention,. but I think that clarification might be good.

The problem with restricting discussion on this list strictly to vodou is that that restricts participation in that discussion to vodou initiates. The rest of us either just don't know enough, or necessarily speak out of other traditions. So you end up with even fewer people with anything much to say on an already very quiet list.

Mind you, I like it quiet. I'm here and not on the larger, more active ATR and pagan lists. But I'd also like to feel like anybody is welcome to speak, everybody is respected, and that we all have something to learn from each other.

If that is also your goal, how do we actively foster that here?

The answer is that they are different islands with histories. St Domingue was known as the most brutally oppressive slave colony in the West Indies. It was safer and more expedient just to go with the St Lazarus image for the Rada and St Peter for the Petwo.

When a Legba is mounted in someone's house or on an altar tho, by an houngan or manbo, which is a way of installing a lwa in a place in a more permanent fashion, a coconut is used where in Cuba they would use the cement head. You might notice that a cocunut has 3 dots that look like two eyes and mouth just like the cement head has 3 shells.

I am interested in learning more about Agarou Tonnere from a Haitian initiate who might have first hand contact with this Lwa. When I was 8 I was invited to a protestant Sunday school. I was baptised Catholic. I had fun that morning. When I came home I was locked out the house and no one was home. I climbed the fence to break into my room through the window. My pants snagged on the wrought iron fence and I fell. That was my first astral experience. In my astral body I saw my dog run to me, and shortly after, my sister came home and carried me into the living room. I watched us from above and felt my astral body pulled to my physical body as I revived.
Later, when reading about Agarou Tonerre, I learned that Vodous who tried to convert to protestantism were often punished by Agarou, one person hitting their head on a rock!
In Andre Pierre's painting "Vodou Pantheon", Agarou is a female in white robe with red head wrap, and a cane shooting out lightning bolts. In in Rada altar there is a waitress style dress with Agarou's veve- the dress is black, red and blue- anything else, people?

After going to Jamaica for a while and living in the Coastal South for years, I was exposed to only a few glimpses are references to Obeah. From what I've understood about it, from being in those places, Obeah is highly respected, but treated like a snake by many; only approached sometimes, and always at a distance.

I would like to see if anyone knows any more indepth resources on Obeah, I've googled most of what I could find on the net, including articles of it's influence in the West Indies and Caribe.

I'm slade, and I am not sure if I have posted here before or not ( I have sporadic Net access). Okay, recently I have been having multiple dreams concerning the loa. this is not the first time I have dreamed of them, as some of them approach me in dreams to communicate with me. But these dreams seem a little different.

In the first one, I was listening to a woman I knew was a Mambo (not a person from my "real life"), and she was holding both my hands and telling me that "I was the strongest of them" (I understood this to mean in a past life) and that "they needed me" (which I understood to mean as they (loa??) needed me in this life). I do not remember what else she said, but the above was the most important.

A few days later i had a similar dream with similar content, but I do not remember the details.

A few days later, I dreamed I was in the cemetery walking in circles around the graves of my paternal grandmother and grandfather. I got the strong feeling from this that I need to set up a shrine to them (which I will do).

I emailed a Mambo I know slightly in new orleans and asked her opinion, but she did not respond. She may have just been busy or maybe it was inappropriate to ask, I don't know. I am not sure what I need to do, if anything. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

I have an interest in this because I am dealing with some schizoid delusions (or realities) involving the selling of my soul to the devil and subsequent damnation and the waiting for death so i can burn for all eternity. I am starting to learn about jung and reality tunnels as well as other form of spirituality like shamanism, egyptian meditiation, voudon palo, and lukumi and I am not sure if the voices i hear are real or not, or who they are. But I seem to have a conscious in my mind that tells me i have sold my soul and am damned and heading for hell. Sometimes he identifies himself as satan, many times he calls himself "me."

I have several theories as to why all this is happening. I have led up till recently a life containing a caustic family realtionship. I fought and argued with my brother and parents for many years and I am very ashamed of the evilI I have comitted verbally and in the uncontrolled use of my temper.

I now fear it is too late since this is what the voices tell me. I initially began having enormous dread in crowds and hearing a dark male voice telling me bad things about myself. this was under the influence of marijuana. At this time my family issues were not being adequately worked on and I was struggling in college.

Eventually, when high, the voice identified himself as the devil. One time, when high I sold him my soul and immediately knew that i was going to hell and going to burn for all time.

A lot of this might have to do with imprinting of religious ideas and projections. The actuall beings i hear may be thought complexes or personalities from my collective unconscious that have found my ego and like to intrude on it.

I have heard schizoid thought is a defense mechanism that is caused by stress and that this is my particular defense mechanism. I am convinced my family relationship and negative actions influenced this whole process.

I am wondering if you understand or can offer any insight into this. And if you can point me to any authors or thinkers or philosophies that could provide assistance.

I was wondering if this is my personal god or lower power, and is it evil and mean becauseI was evil and mean? OR is this the inner power that was in my since birth that has shaped my actions from the unconscious since birth. (I often think i am a demon, or was just born bad, and the voice often agrees that I am demonic or a bad seed)

In public i am distraught because I think I have connections with other lost souls who are also grimly awaiting merciless punishment in hell.

I also hear voices in public that make me think i am picking up other peoples thoughts but only if the thoughts have to do with my status as a damned soul, a person that "is finished" and that "nothing can be done for."

Well I just wanted to see if you could offer any advice.

thank you,

I have a friend who is in serious trouble and needs help. A lot of help. He is psychically attacked by his landlady and this since months back. She has harassed him, and sucked his energy for months. He has worked his ass off for her for months and this is how it ends. Maybe one of you can help him somehow. This is a letter he received from her today when he came back from work. At the end he attached his own notes. You are more then welcome to mail me if you have any suggestions.

Letter from B. W. dated 6/6/07

I read your letter. When I agreed to let you rent the apartment it was for $700/month. This was reduced if you did the landscaping. The $700 goes back to October. Since you are not able to fulfill your part of this verbal agreement you owe the $100 from October through May.
That would be $700 minus the $100 dollars in the envelope. You did not inform me of all your physical problems when you moved into my home. You still owe $300 on the deposit.

I rented to you are the praises of your friends T. and J. Also, T. K. said you were a professor. He also suggested cutting the rent if you do the landscaping. It was his suggestion along with T. and J., that I rented to you. You have said you would give me a Curriculum vitae(?) and the one you showed me was not up to standard. But I will let that ride for now.

The water bill is going up 48% and the NIPSCO (gas and electric) bill is going up. This means my bills will go up. The rent will have to be increased.

Also, Please do not involve my friends in my business. I do not appreciate your using her and be manipulative. T. K. is another one you have talked about my affairs with. My business is my business.
You are a big boy so act like one.
I am sorry you are not well. You did not inform me of your ails when you moved into my home. You have stressed me physically and emotionally with your actions and your negative attitude. I cough when I am stressed. I am tired of this business so I think for yourself and my health you should move on. Perhaps, the U of C. San Diego would like to have you rejoin their faculty.

This is the letter a received after working with mentally impaired teenagers all day long. I broke my finger planting flowers for B. S. can testify as to my work well over $100 that I have done each and every month since I have moved in here..weather it was wracking leaves or shoveling snow..I have worked more than $100 worth of work each month. Because I broke my finger doing her landscaping I am unable to do more work for her but I assure you the landscaping completed would cost 400-500 dollars at least.
I told her on the phone if she wished to get a lawyer he can contact me and that all further conversations should be in written word.
I never taught at the U of C San Diego and for those who have read my Curriculum vitae you will find it on my web page, it is still under construction but I think you will find no one has worked harder and been more professional in academia.
I have no money for food since starting work my food stamps are gone, my unemployment check is gone...so A guy from work lent me some money for food..I stopped at Walmart to buy her a hose for watering out of the kindness of my heart and money I did not have...arriving home to this letter. Yes, my friend has offered shelter in Sweden, but I have worked for this woman all winter and spring and all to enjoy Lake Michigan that lies just a few steps away. I worked for summer peace. I just got home from a hard day of work with a 12 hour shift tomorrow. Please send what protection you can my way..and if your a lawyer send advice.
Thank you

So I was just lamenting how hard it is to find graveyard dirt from certain graves just when you need it. With that in mind, I thought we could offer to collect some to mail to each other. The idea is we post what we need and/or what we can get and hopefully somebody can help us out.

At this point I'm in desperate need of graveyard dirt from a poet's grave. Most any poet of repute will do. If you live in or near Aspen, CO, there's one in particular there that would be especially perfect. If you're in NYC, there are also a number of good poets resting there.

As for what I can offer, I live in Alabama and can help out with needs here. I also live just a few hours from New Orleans and I'm planning a trip there soon, so I'm planning to collect there, especially near Marie Laveau's tomb (with, of course, a big offering of whiskey!).

So if you can help out or if you have anything else to offer or that you'd like, join the thread!

Also, I've seen older accounts of Chanel No. 5 being sloshed out for rituals.
I'm curious about the Caron Bain de Champagne if anyone knows about it. Anyone out there in tribeland have any experience with these commercial products being adopted for spiritual uses?

My name is Jonathan and I'm looking for Vodou practicioners in the Chicago area.

I've been reading as much as I can about Vodou for the past few years, I've made a few trips to the Vodou oriented spots in NOLA (and yes, I do realize that these places are not representative of authentic Vodou), etc...I'm interested in taking my study further.

I have a very intense attraction to the Baron and the Gede family. I was actually born nearly 3 months early, on November 2nd. It's almost as if I was meant to be born that day, instead of the middle-end of January.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

I've been answered by a few people from the Racine camp...but I've heard a lot of crazy stuff regarding that particular group. I have no idea if any of it's true or not, but what I do know is that when I do internet searches on Vodou, something related to her comes up EVERY TIME, and I can't decide if that's a good or bad thing.

So any advice or tips any one can share would be incredibly helpful.

Thanks!
