I had a dream the other night and am wondering if maybe the Loas are contacting me....?
When I was little, I had a plaster "altar" I liked to play with. It was a very beautiful altar, very "Catholic," with several tiers. It was about a foot and a half long, a foot tall, and about 8 inches "thick". Decorated with white plaster "cloths" and "crosses" and such. The "candles" were long with glass tips that shone when you put a light bulb inside the hollow altar and plugged it in! (I was the only child I knew who had a toy altar....LOL!!!)
(BTW, when I was little, I also accompanied my Aunt....who was a nun...to the "real" Church and helped her clean and refresh the BIG Altar at the Church of the Sacred Heart.)
I would sometimes pretend I was a priest when I played with my "little" altar.
Anyway, in my dream, this altar had grown to be "lifesize". Before seeing the altar I was interacting with 2 African/American gentlemen. They were both (in the dream) "rappers." I didn't recognize them, but felt comfortable with one of the them. I was a little more wary of the other one, who seemed to be a "trickster" type. That one wore a black hat.
When I looked at the altar, it was decorated with all kinds of things...flowers, pictures of saints, statues, etc. I also saw pictures of each of the 2 African American gentlemen on the altar! I felt very warm and respectful toward the altar. I was walking around it, ringing a bell. I felt like I was consecrating it or starting a ceremony with it.
Then I woke up!
What do you think of this? I would love to get to know the 2 Loas (if that is what they were....) better. Any ideas on how to do this???

He is always the first and last spirit invoked in any ceremony'
He is the 'gate-keeper' between the worlds of the living and the all the loa'
In Palo' he is called' Lucero' the Keeper of the crossroads' somewhat childlike and loves to play' his number is 3'

Fri, June 12, 2009 - 6:26 AMHello, Nobuoni!
I'm sorry, but I don't understand the words "Kiambote" "Nsala Malekun" or "Nganga." I would appreciate to know what they mean and what language! :-)
The 2 gentlemen seemed to be related....brothers, it seemed.
One wore basic "working clothes"....maybe a denim shirt and jeans. Maybe a leather vest.
The other (with the black hat) wore mostly black, with some extra chains and studs on the clothes.
I don't know anything about Palo....is that like Santeria?
I wouldn't want to mix them up! :-)
I want to follow more the vodou route.....since that is the one I have been learning about.....
Thanks! -

I will offer Papa Legba an offering! Just as a greeting and a thanksgiving! And then I will ask the Baron what he needs to get his work started!!! :-D
May all be done for the good of all, according to free will. (that's how I roll!)

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 6:30 AMI had another dream this weekend. The Baron (still in his work clothes...this time with t-shirt and carpenter jeans) was building something. It was a building that was free-form....something like concrete, or stucco. It was supposed to be a kind of "recording studio" or "concert hall." I was inside of it with him....he was showing me some changes he had made to it. I know, for sure, it had something to do with music.....

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 7:29 PMNobu may well be right . . . however, i might be wise to have more information before making any assumption (or taking any actions) about who the 2 men (Lwas?) are in your dream. From my own perspective i cannot see how the guy in the work clothes is a "Baron", nor am i sure who that Baron might be from Nobu's perspective. The only Vodou Baron i am familiar with is Baron Samedi (himself a Ghedé) and your guy in denim doesn't fit his description at all. I would expect someone in denim to be associated with a Lwa like Azaka (usually depicted as a farmer in denim overalls and a straw hat). I can see how the guy in black might be a Ghedé, but i would expect some clearer descriptive clues if he were. The Ghedés generally make themselves pretty clear in their manner. -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 6:52 AMIt is one of the wonderful things about Vodou (IMO) that it has such a large (and ever growing) family of Loas. Now that you have listed them Nobu i must admit that i do recognize few more Barons such as la Croix and Cimitiere, though i know little about them. The extended families of Loas can sometimes seem endless.
I must also admit that i have no clue what you are talking about when you refer to GG. I am also not sure that we can confine the figures in Maggie's dream to your "GG" family unless Maggie has some particular experience or affinity to working with these spirits. I don't think we can eliminate the possibility of one of these figures being Kouzen (Azaka) simply because he isn't part of the GG family. This is not to say that a Loa that you are completely unfamiliar with might not come to you in a dream, but if we are to look at likelihoods, it seems far more likely that the beings in Maggie's dream are ones that she has already encountered either through direct experience or study, something that she is already aware of.. More very specific Loas are more likely to be dealing with someone from a specific house or family where that very specific Loa is known. I thought of Kouzen Zaka because he is well known even by people with just a general knowledge of Vodou and demin is his known mode of dress, usually with a straw hat.
I am also not sure that we have enough information of these dreams even to know for sure that this is a contact by Loas.
All that aside i would be greatly interested in hearing more about the GG. I am also very interested that in this family a Baron was thrown out for being too lude. I thought ludness and outrageous behavior was a hallmark of the Ghedes.

Tue, June 16, 2009 - 10:03 AMHm. I want to simply ask them their names. In the dream. Do you think this would be too rude???
I remember reading somewhere that Azaka was Ghede's "brother," so it would make sense...............
-
-
Re: Vodou Dream?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 10:45 AMYes you are correct Maggie, there are some who say that Kouzen Zaka is indeed the brother of a Ghede. I don't remember which one at this moment. Keep in mind that generally the Ghedes are considered as a family of spirits with a similar bend. There are many, many Ghedes so to say THE Ghede can be a little confusing.
As to whether or not to ask the names of the figures in your dream, i say go for it. It is, after all, YOUR dream. They have come into your house, not the other way around. I think you have every right to ask. :-) -
-
Re: Vodou Dream?
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 11:01 AMI guess i should back track on this just a touch. I suppose that in a sense all the Ghede spirits are bothers and sisters so i guess that Kouzen would therefore be a brother to all of them. :-) -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 11:30 PMI'm new the tribes, so I'm a bit... hesitant to move about here, but I thought I might ask something.
You said that, in the dream, you saw several pictures, not only those of the "African-American" individuals you soon "met."
May I ask if any stood out to you? Or what items were on the altar, and where on the altar? Or if the candles were, and what color?
In any case, the answers won't mean much to me, but it might help others who are more informed than I. It might help trace which Lwa, if that's indeed what they were, were present. In several belief systems, the Lwa were equated with different Catholic saints, so... it might help. Just a tad, at least, haha. Good luck! -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:01 AMGood questions, Boka. I remember seeing a picture of the Blessed Mother (Mary) as the Immaculate Conception (without a veil). I saw green and dark blue (almost indigo) candles, as well as lots of white (or natural beeswax) candles. I saw some jars that were made of pottery, with lids on them. I think I saw a holy card of St. Joseph, the carpenter. I believe the flowers I saw were white lilies. There were many many items on the altar. I hope I dream it again and remember more! :-) -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 1:36 PMMy dear, the voduns are attempting very hard to communicate with you. What YOU need to do is to find a reputable "diviner" and find out what they want. There is NO need to keep guessing. The diviner will tell you.

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 8:10 PMWell the key word here is "reputable" as i am afraid that there are many charlatans out there just waiting to take your money.
Of course, i am not sure if there is really anything in your dream that speaks specifically of the Loa. It could be many things. It does seem something is trying to speak to you though. Given what you have told us from your own perspective Wedosi, why would the vodouns be trying so hard to communicate with an eclectic white woman in W.Virginia with a background in Wicca who has no family connection to this spiritual tradition?
Now Maggie, from my own point of view i think i do understand why, so i am not saying that this is not a Vodou dream. But i do remain open to all possibilities. The extra info you gave us is helpful. St. Joseph is generally syncronized with Papa Loko who is sorta the patron Loa of Hougans and Mambos. The clay pots in your dream might be govi that hold the gros-bon-ange of the deceased.
I would suggest that if you choice to find a "diviner" to help with this that you ask people you trust for referrals. -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Wed, August 19, 2009 - 10:18 AMActually Nechesh I have NO idea! I do know that we are ALL born of a spirit! And, we ALL have ancestors! While I am deeply connected to my own ancestry, I cannot neither deny or acknowledge the fact that Maggie is not being called or being communicated with, in some way, by the spirits. I believe that in every culture there is a priesthood or call to serve the spirits in some way. I do not believe that it is only for those of African descent. I believe that in EVERY culture people can be called. To what....I am not sure; but, look at the various Kings and Queens of Europe and the concept of rule by divine right. As for my own ancestry, and ways of doing, I know it well; but, I certainly do not have the all and end all on those to whom the spirits decide to call. All I can say is something is happening; and, someone is trying to communicate with Maggie. WHO? I'm not sure. But, just because she is WHITE does not mean that who ever is calling or communicating with her is not divine! :)
Wedosi
P.S. This has become a big issue on the Haitixchange with me and a white Mambo. But, my problem with her has never been one of race (she insist it is) but of her character and total disrespect for the African ancestors.

Re: Vodou Dream?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 5:58 AMThank you, everybody for your point of view. It is true, dear Wedosi, that I need some guidance....however, I have nobody nearby to help me. As a Witch, I've done my own "divining" for many many years...and I am a Priestess in my own tradition. However, I have found (through many ways) that I have past-life connections to Vodou and these are making themselves heard!!! :-)
Nechesh, I understand what you are saying. I've always been a "solitary"....even while joining different groups along the way. I feel my path is very "global" and "international." I feel the beginning of a kind of "World Tribe."
If anybody can recommend a "reputable" Guide, please do let me know! ;-) Meanwhile, I will do my best to follow the Path of the Heart.
Love to you all!!! -

The Dream that changed my life....
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 1:37 PMDreams can be very life changing. This is the one that changed my focus from the world to the spiritual. I first wrote of it on HX but will copy it here. I would be intesrested in your thoughts....
The dreams yes....so many dreams. Well I have already told my story, that Vodun caught me when I traveled to Benin trying to get a PHD. But there was one defining moment. You see, my main thing was to get my PhD and go back to NYC and continue my life in the field of Psychoanalysis. I had taught high school for 7 years and returned to graduate school to get a Master's in Psychoanalysis. I studied at the Object Relations Institute of Psychotherapy to become an analyst: but, I was told that I was absolutely obsessing on everything African. Anyway, I journeyed to Africa to prove that conventional Psychotherapy simply didn't work for African Americans and attempted to take a more cultural approach to psycho-therapeutic treatment. But, I got caught by the Voduns.
Upon arrival, I was told that my visits to Africa were not by chance. I had been on a life journey that led me to Vodun. In 1998 I traveled to Benin on three separate occasions. Each time it was a dream that made me go back. On one occasion I remember a dream that woke me in the night screaming! There was a grand serpent! I put the snake in a bag and attempted to get rid of it; but, everywhere I took it, it would be back when I returned home. I tried to put it on a plane, trains, throw it in dumpsters...every way I could think of throwing it away I would try it. But the snake would always be back, at the house, when I returned. I am terrified of snakes! This great snake...ayidowedo...simply would not let me reject it. But, my defining moment came when I came back after 3 months in an initiation chamber in Benin, West Africa.
There was an old woman who lived behind me. I did not know, at the time, that she was a relative of Dagbo Hounon Houna....the Supreme Chef du Vodun. As family head Dagbo had asked me for money to build a small apt. to have a place to live when I came for ceremonies. I didn't know that the property actually belonged to one of his family member's who had died. He used me to develop the property, put water on it etc. etc. There was an old woman who lived behind me. The old woman hated me. She would sit on my porch and beg for food. I would give her what I had; but, she also would pour down curses on my head on occasion. So, I would ask her to leave. I didn't know that she actually was the wife of the property owner who had died.
Upon my return from a 3 month initiation the woman was sick. I was told she was dying. I went to her. Dagbo's son said, " Mami forget her. It is her time...she is dying!" The lady was skin and bone. I went to the pharmacy and got vitamins (B12) for her. She was not eating; and, I was attempting to help. A day later she got up...the family took pictures...and she died a day after that. I was saddened.
About a week or two later I had the dream that changed my life. In this dream I was walking on a very long journey; and, in my arms I was carrying this woman. She was a bag of bones! I walked and I walked carrying her. While on the journey I kept saying to myself...."This woman is broken...they will NEVER accept her! Why am I doing this...she is not worthy!" I walked and I walked. At the end of my journey I came to a great light; and, I lifted her up to the light. Hands reached out to accept her; and, a voice said unto me, "IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF HER THAT WE ACCEPT HER; BUT, IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU!" Tears flowed from my eyes!
That is the dream that changed my life! I knew then that there was something going on in my life that I needed to pay attention to. I was a PRIESTESS! I have not looked back!

Re: The Dream that changed my life....
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 1:46 PMWow.....Wedosi, I LOVE dreams about Snakes! I used to be afraid of them, but now I love them! There is one who lives in my yard and we are great friends!
Snakes always seem to bring us back to our Primal Elemental Self! Snake is the Great Ancestor....all of us have a Reptilian Brain that is left from that Time. The Snake connects us with the Dream Time! Yes, oh yes, that was a Powerful Dream! Snakes also connect us with our own sensuousness and are great friends of Women! (I know that Snake in the Garden of Eden was really a friend! Not perfect, but a friend.)
;-)
The dream with you carrying the old women's bones strikes me more as a dream about your own spiritual path. The old woman was a reflection of your Self. You were carrying your Self, your own bones. You were offering them to your Highest Self.
No one judges us but ourselves.

Thu, August 27, 2009 - 8:28 AMI am STILL terrified of snakes! In Benin, West Africa there is a place call the Python Temple. The people in this village, called Ouidah, originally worshipped the python. It is still very much an active temple today. They have footage of this python temple on Youtube. Check it out!

Re: The Dream that changed my life....
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 10:05 AMDear Wedosi....here's how I lost my fear of snakes (though I still do really really respect them!):
I decided one day to go into a pet shop and look at the snakes. While I was looking at a Python (!), the salesclerk said, "Do you want to see her closer?" I said "OK," and before I knew it, he had taken the snake out of the cage and draped it over my arm!!!
:-o
I looked at her and she looked at me. She looked like she was used to people. I put out my finger and pet her back. She felt dry, not slimy at all. Nice. We looked at each other and I pet her for a while more. Then the salesclerk put her back in her cage.
I don't go out of my way to keep snakes, but when I see them, in the woods or in my yard, I salute them. Sometimes I sing to them as I walk. In the Springtime, I give them offerings by their snakeholes.
Here is one thread where we were discussing snakes:

Re: The Dream that changed my life....
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 10:54 AMMaggie, I am sure that I will never get over my fear of snakes. It seems to be a natural fear that I am not willing to overcome. However, when sleeping and the spirits visit me in their snake form I am not afraid. I handle them and am rather amazed why they bite, if I stick my hands out to them, but I am not poisoned! In Africa, I used to have dreams with me sleeping in snake dens. This was just my understanding my own spirit which is a very large serpent. They say snakes are our friends; but, I am still not yet convinced. These most ancient of creatures scare me something awful! :)

Re: Vodou Dream?
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 7:56 AMJust want to add another possible Vodou Dream....
The other night I dreamt that I was working on making another altar. This one was up on a platform, and was basically just a bunch of interesting things arranged on that platform.
The fascinating thing is that there were 2 young women helping me....they were Twins. They had short blond (!) hair and were fairly lean and svelt. They looked to be in their teens. They had on shorts and sleeveless tops. One of them was names "Mia." (I don't know any Mia's in my life.)
At one point, I sat in a seat that was on top of the platform. The seat was up high....like a tractor seat. When I sat in it, I noticed it was near the edge of the platform in a precarious position. I was afraid it would fall off the platform. Also, it was too small for me. I got up and moved it more toward the Center of the platform.
After that, I went to get the (male) priest and bring him to come see the progress of the Altar.

Sun, August 30, 2009 - 5:39 PMThank you for your affirmation, Nobu. I was thinking that, too....and wondering just why they had come to me. Lately, I've been trying to heal my body and get in better health....and they, being young and healthy, were maybe giving me a vision of youth that is, somehow, still available to me on some level.
There also seems to be a message about "centering" myself and giving myself a little more room....
I must admit, I've been looking forward to my dreams a lot more, lately! -

Re: Vodou Dream?
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 10:04 AMWith all of these dreams that you have...I really suggest that you have divination done. One can misinterpret dreams. Or dreams can be things that we wish for versus what is real. Our mind also can play tricks or our dreams can be about simple everyday occurances as opposed to something spiritual. I would want to be sure. As a priestess, I seldom have everyday dreams anymore. Mine usually consist of the spirits telling me something; but, every now and then, if I have a stressful day, I will dream a dream that is about that particular event. I am sure that you know your own body; but, I am just making a suggestion.

I am waiting to get a reading until I have the right attitude. You see, I've been a Solitary for so long....NOBODY between me and my Spirits! I'm not quite sure how to approach someone who believes that I don't know what's best for myself! Ha ha!
I'm meditating upon it......and talking with my Spirits about it. Please say a prayer for me to do the right thing, whatever it might be.
