I posted this in another thread but thought it was really it's own. I have always been curious as to whether Babaluaye/ Asojano and his family Nanume, Nana Buruku are worshipped in Haiti. From the Afro-Cuban perspective they are the principle Fon divinities, Voduces, but I never heard of anything about them in Haitian Vodou. Do you think they were absorbed in a way into Guede? The Guede always seem a little like Babaluaye to me with their relationship to death, the anscestors, sexuality and healing which are very Babaluaye fields. Also the multiple personalities since he has many roads. Any thoughts?

Re: Babaluaye
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 7:59 PMTo answer your question Jason I would say no.It depends on the area of Haiti.I would say Haitians that follow more of a Dahomey mythology honor him more. Not saying that he isn't important!I honor him all the time actually. He is called Kobayende in Palo.Babalu Aye or Saint Lazurus in Santeria.I actually have his entire image(a tatoo) with the dogs and all on my left calf muscle. So like I said it depends on the area and the Haitian.

Wed, March 19, 2008 - 8:21 PMYou know what else I forgot to add jason. In Rada rite vodou(African base Lwa)that is practiced in Haiti,Papa Legba Atibon is considered to be Saint Lazurus. The Rada rite lwa's is considered to be cool spirits, not hot.He also is supposed to be the gate opener to the spirits.Which some don't agree with.Like I said it depends on the Haitian and area they are from and which sect of Vodou thay follow. -

Re: Babaluaye
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 9:41 AMSakpata doesn't seem to have made if from the Kingdom of Dahomey to Haiti, but he is still popular in the People's Republic of Benin. I'm not sure how closely Sakpata is associated with Babaluaye. It is written that Sogbo is often identified with Shango since they were both popular near the borders of Dahomean Yorubaland. And in Fon mythology, Sogbo and Sakpata had some serious issues- similar to the pataki about Shango blasting Osanyin. But all this speculation probably doesn't help in any practical sense. However, I am told that there is no reason why an American can't be initiated in Santeria/Lukumi and Haitian Vodou at the same time, so long as you intend to keep your religions separated. Or so I'm told. So you can have all your Lwa and Orisha, just not in the same room. Or has that changed now? -

Re: Babaluaye
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 12:43 PMNo.Damien u are right.U can be initiated into them all.Just keep everything separate like u stated.U are basically gonna have sort of the same spirits anyway. It's just a different name and slightly a different custom on how to honor them.U don't change who u are(meaning spirit guides)just because u go to a different religion.U are who u are.U jsut have to take the time out to honor them all equally.
