So what's the deal here anyway? Supposedly there are 356 members of this tribe. Doesn't anyone have something they want to talk about or tell us? No Questions, no answers...nothing??? If so this is very sad and i am indeed very disappointed. For the most part i just got here and there is really zero discussion. I tried really hard to get a good discussion of Vodou drumming started, but nothing. Can anyone tell me where i can go where people are actually discussing this subject?

I wish I knew, too, Nechesh! I think maybe just a few people are left because Tribe has been so "off and on" lately. And maybe they are busy or just don't know what to say.

I've been thinking about a tribe that would be a bit looser....maybe include "Vodou in popular culture" sometimes, too......

Well Maggie, it's nice to know that you are still out there at least. :-)
Are you considering any festivals this year?

I'd love to know of such festivals! But not this year....I've just had major surgery and will be going back to work next week....little by little, I am healing.

What kind of festivals do you like to attend?? Is there a Vodou festival? :-)

Maggie, i don't know of any Vodou festivals per se, but there are a few that have Vodou or Voodoo related aspects. I'm going to Babalon Rising next week in Indiana, mostly because Louis Martinié (author of the New Orleans Voodoo Tarot and temple drummer for the New Orleans Voodoo Temple) will be there. Also i plan on hitting Starwood in Sherman, NY, which always has the New Orleans Voodoo Temple present for rituals.

Thanks, Nechesh, I appreciate your good wishes!

If you DO go to any of these festivals, please share your experiences, if you wish! I love Martine and would love to know more about him!

              I meant Louis Martinié. :-)

Here's a website that has a good video of him drumming..........

                  Hm...that didn't work either!

Well, what I did was search in Google for "Louis Martinié" and then go to the VisWiki page that came up in the Search.

                  GREAT drumming in the video!

Here's a fairly recent interview with Louis Martinié:

Cool Maggie, thanks for the interview. Louis is such a wise, gentle and giving soul. I am honored to call him my friend. I was at that Winterstar where that interview took place. That new Katrina rhythm was, indeed, powerful. :-)

SO glad you enjoyed that! I've been reading his writings for quite a while. I'd had this image of him as a wise OLD elder. It was really cool to see him as he is. I believe I'll appreciate his writings even more now! It is interesting that the power of Katrina has manifested as a Loa. She seems to me to be related to the kind of power that the Santeria orisha OYA manifests.....very cleansing and teaching the power of Nature.

I know that ceremonies were done before the hurricane to keep New Orleans out of harm's way. It was really the levy-breech that caused most of the real destruction.....

I pray for the continued re-birth of New Orleans. (and yes, I have also contributed in material ways....) ;-)

I am also doing work that will (hopefully) contribute to the re-birth of Haiti. . .and, of course, Africa.

You know, I've tried to start many discussions, had many questions but it was almost like everyone was so guarded and everything was secret, I quit trying. there were even a couple of very rude people that responded to my questions. So I gave up on this tribe and most the others seem the same. I would love to get a tribe going with sincere people willing to help others learn and discuss as well

Well, that's nice to hear Mab, maybe we can. It is true that there are some secrets of initiation that you are not going to get people to talk about here, nor do i think they should. But there is so much about Vodou that is not a secret that we can openly talk about that i don't really see this as an issue. I have found that most often those who reacted with an overly guarded and/or secret manner are really just people who don't know what they are talking about and attempt to hide that fact in occult coveralls. And there is really no excuse for rudeness even if you ask questions that cannot be answered in a public forum.

I think we should certainly consider it. I understand secrets that must be kept, but there is also a way to say that certain questions simply cannot be answered in a kind manner. I have experience with European occultism, Irish ancestry ect, but I've been continually drawn to Vodou. Pulled strongly I should say! So I've turned to books I've that I've heard the writer has a fairly good reputation for accuracy and truth, not ones for exaggeration. I've read some things on the web but who can tell where the truth lies here!
I would love to have somewhere to join that is kind to newcomers, open to helping and discussion. Maybe we will have to work on that.

dont lose hope Mab....;-) things like that happen..so we can learn from them..im not saying its a good thing people are nasty sometimes in the way they word things..but us as spiritual people learn from that..it keeps us open to the out side world...so we dont forget what we are fighting for.....PEACE!!!..;-) DONT EVER LET ANYONE STEAL YOUR JOY!..(smile) if u dont get the answers your looking for...hay!!!??? keep looking...sometimes...little do we know ..that we become the teacher to those that are nasty,,,it lets u know on the level the spiritual things are at..u may have the answers to things..but it dont mean u carry the wisdon(wink)...;-) keep ur head up girl...i do!

This will probably be my only post because I ran into this tribe by accident. However, I was concerned that so many were asking about Vodun. Let me introduce myself. I am called Wedosi...short for Ayidowedohounon. I am part of a Haitian forum (Haitixchange.com) where we discuss Haitian Vodou and African Vodun amongst other topics. The discussions are lively! There is a thread called Benin Vodun/Haitian Vodoun. There is a Mambo on the site and myself...An African initiated Priestess. If you want to learn more about Vodun you need to find a reputable Haitian Mambo/Hougan or someone trained in Africa. I admit... there are certain prejudices that we who carry familial voduns have. African Vodun is a very closed society! I spent 8 long years in the temples of Benin, West Africa. But, if you need help I am always available to answer questions that can be answered. Many cannot if you are not an initiate. I am at ayidowedohounon@yahoo.com. If you find the HX site scroll until you find the thread I have mentioned above. Much of the information found there is not contained in books. Join as a quest and read. I'll be honest...we fight sometimes on there; but, that is life!
