Honoring Our Ancestors

I have had a photo of my maternal Grandmother and Grandfather in my kitchen for a while. Yesterday, I got the notion of taking it down, cleaning it and getting it preserved somehow, and making it a centerpiece of a new Altar I want to make for Ancestors.

How do you (personally) honor your Ancestors? Maybe by sharing our personal stories, we can honor them here.....

It is always a very important thing to honor one's ancestors. The way we do it in vodun might be different from what most people do. I believe that most folks simply collect photographs and light candles or whatever. I am not sure. I look forward to others sharing their experiences. African ancestor commemoration/remembrance always involves sacrifice. When I have more time I will share it with you. In the meantime remembering those who have passed on, in your prayers, is a worthwhile thing. I often call upon my ancestors to intercede for me, with the spirits, and help smooth the path inwhich I walk.

I do not know if there is so much a right way or a wrong way. I was told my ancestral altar had to be set up a certain way but how I do not know what way that is. I just follow my heart. How would I like to be remebered. I put myself in their shoes so to speak and I know that I would like to be addressed respectfully and honestly. I call upon my ancestors, I do not pray to them. Those I do remember I sometimes talk, laugh and reminesce of the times we had. I sing for them sometimes. maybe I'm a little off to some but this time I spend is very valuable to me. So much good has come from conversing with my eggun. I no longer feel alone, no longer do I feel depressed and oppressed. And I feel stronger now because of my knowledge and the the goodness that has manifested from it.

My Ancestors sometimes come to me and give me their perspective on things. Sometimes I take their advice, and sometimes I don't. Sometimes, I just laugh and shake my head and say....."You've not changed!"

My husband sees his Ancestors in the animals. Sometimes they will come to him in this form. He finds it very comforting. He does his best to honor them, when this happens, by paying attention to them and sometimes feeding them.

Here is a great book that gives many ideas about connecting with and honoring your Ancestors:

__Sacred Legacies: Healing Your Past and Creating a Positive Future" by Denise Linn

The following is from a site that discusses this book:

"Written for her daughter and those in generations to come, this helpful and hopeful book explores four acts of personal power that can positively affect the future. Denise Linn is an internationally known healer, lecturer, and author of Sacred Space, The Secret Language of Signs, and Quest. Most of the material in Sacred Legacies comes out of her Native American heritage and her belief that guided meditations and visualization exercises are great tools for self-exploration and self-realization.

"In a chapter on finding your roots and honoring your ancestors, Linn emphasizes the importance of this connection with the past. By having a family reunion, starting a family tree, or visiting the place where your ancestors lived, individuals can tap into this source of spiritual energy. A second step is breaking free from negative ancestral and family patterns.

"Next, Linn explores the importance of creating a new vision of the future so you can empower your descendants. This can be achieved by writing a life-history letter, planting a tree, creating a generational box, making a video portrait, and other projects. The final step is fashioning a spiritual legacy through ritual, myth, and family stories. By honoring your ancestors and empowering your descendants you can make the most of the transformative power of the generations."

Through our blood-Ancestors, we get to know the parts of ourselves that we have chosen to focus upon in this lifetime.

However, I believe we have other Ancestors---cultural Ancestors, creative Ancestors, spiritual Ancestors. These are the people who truly resonate with our Souls and Spirits....our mentors, our inspirations, our teachers, our examples! Perhaps there were a few Teachers who pointed you in the right direction. Perhaps there is an Artist who inspires you, a Musician who fills your soul with joy, a writer who gives you the new perspectives that you need to do your work in the world! Each of these could be chosen by you as an Ancestor.

Also, I like to honor my Past Life Selves as Ancestors of my Spirit.

This is a good practice, especially for those of us who have had dysfunctional families and want to have better examples to inspire us to be the best we can be in this life! I still honor ALL my blood-ancestors, but I don't always feel that I want to follow in their footsteps. I feel I have chosen to be born into my blood-family, and yet there are others who feel "akin" to me. Those, I also honor as Ancestor.

Wow Maggie... cool.... I was always interested in finding out about that... it would do me a world of good. Any suggestions on where I can find out about past life regressions ( If I am using the right terminology).

A similar topic about Ancestral remebrance was brought up in another tribe and I found it rather interesting.

Meanwhile, there's a great book that helped me get ahold of my "memories", well, some of them....those that are relevant to me here, now. It is:

I'm wondering now, Maggie, if GELEDE can be included in the honoring of your particular ancestors...since we feel that this spirit is indeed with you. I also wonder if you might be able to find a reproduction of the GELEDE masks or if you could make one yourself or have one made? What do you think of such an idea? If you ever travel to Africa, I can, of course, send you or take you to the GELEDE temples; but, I wonder how you can access this wonderful spirit now? Any suggestions anyone?

Aaaah Wedosi... just the person I wanted to see.... I dreamt you last night.... i guess in the same image from your pics except I was there with you in Benin... you were initiating me into the religion.... it was oh so beautiful and grand.... I woke up happy... you took such good care of me in making sure that everything was right.

Now with the idea you stated... I think it sounds good because... I guess from what little I do know.... the ancestors are closely linked to Gelede at this point... it would be nice to include them... make them feel at home ... treat them good... they're friends of family (in a sense) ... so..make them feel welcome... yes? IDK just my 2 cents.

Hi Crystal! Thanks for your invitation and your post. Yes, the ancestors are certainly important. You are from NYC? If so, I sincerely miss that place. I'm here due to family matters; but, I pray to be able to travel soon. I lived in NYC from 1982-1998. Left there for Africa! Learned soooo much there. Couldn't stay away from the African markets! Are you interested in African traditional spiritual systems?
