Re: What's Baron Samedi drinking?
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 8:28 AMHa HA! That was pretty funny, for sure! I bet the Baron is still laughing about it. I really enjoyed seeing the Vodou people and how they moved with this. Definitely fits the bill for "Vodou in popular culture!" They don't really tell the ingredients of the drink. And where the "energy" comes from! Caffeine?
I actually like the ads. Some advertising people are really creative (and adventurous) people!
Personal note: I was very moved by the drumbeat at the beginning of the Wednesday segment. I think it was a call to Maman Brigitte??
If you google "energy drink" and "Samedi," you'll find some interesting reviews and comments.... -

Re: What's Baron Samedi drinking?
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 9:37 AMThat would be my good friend Louis MartiniƩ being ridden by the Baron on Wednesday's segment, temple drummer for the New Orleans Voodoo Temple and author of The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot. I just saw Louis at Babalon Rising festival in Indiana this past weekend and we had a few good laughs about this. Apparently these guys pissed Mambo Miriam off just a little bit.
The ad campaign is hysterical! They were actual written not by the ad people, but supposedly by the Baron himself, i think mostly from the Mama Lola encounter, though i have to give them credit for having the balls to scrawl them on walls all across Australia. My personal favs: "Tell everyone i have a big dick" and "It tastes like a woman"! Just priceless! :-D

Re: What's Baron Samedi drinking?
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 9:54 AMCrystal, i do realize that everyone has a right to their own sense of humor (or lack of it), but mine has always been somewhat dark and sarcastic so for me the Baron energy drink stuff was hilarious. Yes, i do believe that these poor miss guided souls did indeed lack a certain understanding and level of respect for Vodou. That is certainly NOT what i found funny about the whole thing. You do have to understand that the mambos and houngans they were dealing with do carry some bit of respect in the community. Frankly i believe that many of them were taking these ad guys for a fun little ride. You must realize that none of these rituals are done for free and i am sure that the little adventure these Auzzies had in New Orleans cost them a bit, to the benefit of the various houses they approached. And Mama Lola pouring their own horrid product all over them in the latter video was just priceless, not to mention the campaign slogans the Baron passed on through her. Do you really think their product will be successful with ad lines like "It tastes like a woman" and "I have a big dick" ??? Yes, the Auzzies were being just a little sacrilegious, but in the end i believe that the joke was on them.
And BTW, i do hope that you realize that the Landover Baptist site is intended to be satire. I hope you are not taking it seriously. I also find it extremely amusing. -

Re: What's Baron Samedi drinking?
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 1:29 PMHey Nechesh... I do get your sense of humor but its just that I've always felt sensitve in the whole portrayal of ATRs in the mainstream... but since you put it in that context... putting feelings aside, it was kind of funny ... just kind of... lol ;-)
In regards to my link, I do know that it is satirical.... as a matter of fact it was the comment I posted when I found it in the devine feminine tribe... but even this too, though I may find quite comical can be offensive to some so yeah I do dig what you're saying .... I was just shocked at the marketing tactics of those silly ass kids... thats all ;-)
